4. Intergenerational knowledge transfer: Facilitation of knowledge sharing between the elderly and younger generations

The guest of honour was Dr. Khader Vali, popularly known as ‘The Millet Man of India’. He is a pioneering Indian organic farmer and environmentalist. According to Dr. Vali, “The system is rigged as business has taken over science. We should not have been eating rice, we should not have been growing rice, so much so as the 800 million tonnes which are being grown, but if we were to follow science, this would not be done.” He went on to say that all across the globe, rice and wheat are being consumed, and that is not healthy.

He also said that the youth of today and even other people have no awareness about this at all. Dr. Vali commented that, “We need to go to colleges and schools to spread awareness, and I have been to more than 3,000 colleges in the southern part of India. It is not enough, as it is like a drop of water from the ocean. We need to buckle up and start educating the younger generation, mostly by speaking about scientific things rather than business-oriented approaches.” Dr. Vali feels the system has made business an agenda and science is not taken into account, and that also is the reason he called the system ‘rigged’.

The teenagers of today have to be influenced by our actions and the right consumption as a beginning of setting an example. Dr. Vali also said that, “Autoimmune diseases are prevalent today. The milk given to children today is not pure. Millets control glucose in the blood, and the regulation of it is beneficial in a huge manner.” According to him, the gut-brain axis will be healthy, leading to better mental health as well.

He also stated that obesity can easily be treated by consuming millets. Millets are the answer to forthcoming generations being healthy, and children will not get ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), which is becoming very common now. Diabetes and anxiety, along with heart conditions, are positively affected by the consumption of millets. There will be a hormonal balance as well. Millets make the immunity of all people who consume them very strong, and hence lead to a disease-free body and mind.
